What a Legal Aid Certificate Covers
Family Law
Representation under a certificate for family law matters — divorce and separation, decision-making responsibility and parenting time, child and spousal support, and restraining orders. If you are experiencing domestic violence, Legal Aid Ontario offers additional support and broader eligibility.
Child Protection
If a children's aid society has become involved with your family — or has started a proceeding under the Child, Youth and Family Services Act — you have the right to a lawyer, and legal aid is often available regardless of the usual income limits. These cases move quickly. Get representation early.
How It Works
Apply to Legal Aid Ontario
Apply online at legalaid.on.ca or call 1-800-668-8258. LAO assesses your financial situation, family size, and legal issue.
Receive Your Certificate
If approved, LAO issues a legal aid certificate — authorization for a private roster lawyer of your choosing to represent you, paid by Legal Aid Ontario.
Bring It to Us
Contact our office with your certificate number. After a conflict check, we confirm acceptance, complete the retainer, and get to work on your case.
Who Qualifies?
Eligibility is determined by Legal Aid Ontario — not by our office — based on your gross family income, family size, and the type of legal issue. If you are experiencing domestic violence or are facing a child protection matter, you may qualify for LAO services even if your income is above the usual limits, including a free consultation with a lawyer through LAO.
Learn more or check your eligibility directly at legalaid.on.ca or by calling 1-800-668-8258 (Monday–Friday).
